India to Continue Buying Oil from Russia: Report Counters Trump's Remarks
Decision guided by national interest and global energy stability
Date: August 2, 2025 | By: AKP News 786
India has reaffirmed its intent to continue crude oil imports from Russia, challenging former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent claims that India had reduced energy trade with Moscow under global pressure. A government-backed report emphasizes that India's decisions are driven by economic needs and long-term stability, not political optics.
Trump's Comments and India’s Response
During a campaign event, Donald Trump claimed that India was “making good moves” by limiting oil imports from Russia. However, Indian officials and energy analysts have rejected this view, calling it inaccurate and politically motivated.
India’s Oil Strategy Remains Unchanged
According to the Petroleum Ministry, India's energy policy prioritizes affordability, accessibility, and diversified sourcing. Amid global instability, Russia continues to offer competitive rates and stable supply chains.
Russia remains India's top crude oil supplier for the 12th consecutive month, contributing over 35% of its total oil imports as of July 2025.
Payments are conducted via rupees, dirhams, and other non-dollar options to avoid banking disruptions caused by sanctions.
Support from the Global South
India’s actions have found support across developing nations, many of whom face similar energy challenges. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasized in a recent statement, “India will make energy decisions based solely on its national priorities.”
This reflects India’s long-standing principle of strategic autonomy, where foreign policy decisions are made independently without being swayed by global powers.
Conclusion
Despite external rhetoric, India continues to prioritize its own energy security. Trump's interpretation of India's oil strategy does not align with on-ground realities. The country’s steadfast approach shows a strong balance between diplomacy and domestic need.
